THE country has started rolling out the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmittion of HIV (PMTCT) Option B+ programme which entails enrolling all pregnant women on ART for life, regardless of their CD4 cell count.

This was revealed by Nokuthula Maseko from Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation at the Trade Fair yesterday. Government, a few years ago engaged on trials for this programme and before its completion, a decision has already been taken to roll out the programme considering success stories from other countries. This will see all pregnant women being enrolled on ART for life.

Nomvuselelo Sikhondze also from EGPAF explained that they gave people who visited their stand information on PMTCT and the importance of visiting the clinic early. She said this allows health workers to check the mother for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) such as Syphilis which increase the infection rate for unborn babies.

She emphasised on the importance of couple testing so that partners get their results together.

“For all of us to get to 2022, we need to enroll all pregnant mothers to ART for life. PMTCT Option B+ has worked in other countries and government has taken a decision to roll out the programme,” Sikhondze said.
