Kids Turn up for Kids
Friends of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), including advocates and celebrity supporters, turned up for the 20th Kids 4 Kids (K4K) family festival at the Field House at the world-famous Chelsea Piers in New York City on Saturday, September 27. Kids of all ages and their families enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon with a serious purpose — to raise critical funds for an AIDS-free generation.
World-renowned fashion photographer and EGPAF board member Nigel Barker and his wife, Cristen, co-chaired K4K. “At EGPAF we will do whatever it takes until no child has AIDS, because we know that an AIDS-free generation isn’t just a dream. With your help, we can make it a reality,” said Barker.
In his remarks, Barker called for supporters to sign EGPAF’s pledge for an AIDS-free generation. Our longtime partner Jewelers for Children (JFC) will donate $1 for every person who takes the pledge. Underscoring our shared commitment to eliminating pediatric AIDS, JFC has also generously agreed to match donations — doubling the impact of contributions that help fund our lifesaving work.
Celebrities from the worlds of sports, fashion, and entertainment interacted with kids and their families: New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey, Miss Universe Gabriela Isler, Olympic swimmer Matt Targett, and actress and EGPAF celebrity ambassador Fatima Ptacek. Other celebrity guests included cast members from Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black” Joel Garland, and Yael Stone; Clare Foley, Zabryna Guevara, J.W. Cortes, and David Mazouz from Fox’s new series “Gotham;” Jonny Lee Miller from CBS’s “Elementary;” and Kristen Taekman of “Real Housewives of New York.”
Special activities included classes with the Boston Ballet’s Kathryn Boren and yoga instructor Tara Stiles, graffiti wall art with artist Shantell Martin, and physical activities with Kirk Myers Fitness. Families also played interactive games from Disney, created beats with Scratch DJ Academy, and got craftsy with supplies from Skip Hop. To wrap up the festival, bluegrass band Seven Handle Circus broke out the banjo and mandolin for a footloose acoustic performance.
“EGPAF works in many countries with the highest rates of HIV infection in the world,” said Chip Lyons, EGPAF president and CEO. “We deliver prevention and treatment services, conduct research, and advocate on behalf of children and families. Working hand-in-hand with our partners, EGPAF will continue to push forward with our work – until no child has AIDS.”
