I have worked in programs funded by the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in South Africa since 2003.
The magnitude of the HIV epidemic in South Africa has the potential to overwhelm us, and we have to constantly reinvigorate ourselves and remember that every child who is born HIV-negative and every HIV-positive child who has access to antiretroviral treatment is a life saved. I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work with a dynamic team, on programs that definitely make an impact on people’s lives.
We are currently supporting South Africa’s national PMTCT program and are encouraged by the fact that PMTCT is being placed very high on the agenda of our new government. We are also committed to developing strong partnerships with community-based organizations that assist orphans, vulnerable children, and people living with HIV. In this way, we will be able to ensure that HIV-infected children and their families are given all the support they need to rebuild their lives.
