Fundação Ariel Glaser Launches in Mozambique; Foundation Begins Transition of HIV/AIDS Programs to Local Organization

In November 2011, the Foundation announced the launch of Fundação Ariel Glaser contra o SIDA Pediátrico, also known as Fundação Ariel Glaser, in Mozambique. The new organization, which is closely and voluntarily linked with the Foundation, represents a timely step forward in the Foundation’s efforts to increase and support country-led HIV programming, to expand national capacity, and to empower local partners.

In the video below, Fundação Ariel Glaser Executive Director Paula Vaz describes her organization's work in Mozambique.

The launch event in Maputo was very well-attended, with representatives from the Mozambique Ministry of Health, USAID, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on hand, along with Foundation President and CEO Charles Lyons, Fundação Ariel Glaser Executive Director Paula Vaz, and the Foundation’s Country Director for Mozambique Fernando Morales.

As it works to eliminate pediatric AIDS and provide care and treatment for people living with HIV in Mozambique, Fundação Ariel Glaser implements innovative strategies to respond to the national HIV epidemic and to ensure access to sustainable health services for children, women, and families.

In addition, Fundação Ariel Glaser collaborates with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, and other partners including the Foundation to support the provision of high-quality HIV services – and to ensure that its efforts are well-integrated into existing provincial and district health systems.

"Our mission is what drives us to the creation of local organizations," said Lyons in a speech at the launch event."We know that local solutions are the most effective, and without local ownership, our efforts cannot be sustained. Fundação Ariel Glaser stands to be a leader in our shared mission to end pediatric AIDS in Mozambique.”
