Children's Health
Since its inception, a key focus of the Foundation's advocacy work has been ensuring that children have access to the best that science and medicine have to offer. Pediatric Drug Testing Part of giving children the best possible care is ensuring that they have access to pharmaceutical products specifically tested, dosed, and formulated for their use. Over the past decade, the Foundation has played a lead role in working with Congress and the Administration to enact legislation that has been widely credited with dramatically increasing the number of drugs tested and labeled for children. Full coverage Pediatric Testing of Medical Devices Building on its success in promoting pediatric drug testing, the Foundation is now working with Congress and other pediatric advocates to address the need for medical devices specifically designed to meet children's needs. Currently, many essential medical devices are not designed and labeled for pediatric use, forcing healthcare providers to use interventions that may be less effective and/or higher risk. The Foundation is working to ensure that pediatric populations have access to devices that are safe and effective with respect to their age, size, developmental status, and other unique characteristics. Full coverage Drug Safety and Public Access to Clinical Trial Information The Foundation also actively supports legislation to improve our nation's ability to ensure the safety of medical products once on the market and to improve the public's access to information about clinical trials of new therapies. The Foundation will continue to urge Congress to act on these issues and to ensure that the needs of children are adequately addressed in important public health legislation. Full coverage Stem Cell Research The Foundation advocates for policies that advance research into treatments for pediatric disease, including research involving embryonic stem cells and somatic cell nuclear transfer. Many scientists believe this type of research holds great promise for preventing and alleviating the suffering of children and adults with life-threatening illnesses, such as juvenile diabetes, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's, spinal cord injuries, HIV/AIDS, and other devastating medical conditions. We strongly endorse efforts in Congress to enact legislation that would allow this critical research to move forward, while at the same time banning reproductive cloning, a practice we all agree is unsafe and unethical.
