Addressing HIV is key to improving maternal and child health in South Africa, according to a presentation given today by Dr. Kuku Appiah – the Foundation’s South Africa country director – at the Women Deliver conference. She spoke today on a panel advocating a family-centered approach to preventing mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV, along with representatives from UNAIDS, UNICEF, ICAP, and Mothers-2-Mothers.
A native of Ghana, Appiah has lived and worked as a medical doctor in South Africa for two decades, and has witnessed the epidemic grow to massive proportions.

Three hours ago the South Africa national soccer team, Bafana Bafana, paraded the streets of Sandton — near the Foundation’s Johannesburg office — to celebrate the country’s hosting of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup. Everybody came to the streets to welcome and encourage the team. The Foundation “Joined the Moment” and created awareness with vuvuzelas that have a special message, as a way to create dialogue around HIV/AIDS.

As a Tanzanian, I was honored today to travel with the First Lady of my country, Mama Salma Kikwete, to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation’s (EGPAF) office in Washington, D.C. The First Lady is in the U.S. capital this week attending the Women Deliver conference as part of her advocacy on women and child health issues.

Tanzania is a great example of what is possible in the fight against HIV/AIDS when there is high-level political commitment to address the pandemic, particularly its effects on women and children.
In this post, we introduce you to the Foundation's work in Tanzania, a country that has seen a dramatic scale-up of HIV/AIDS services over the past seven years, as told by former country director, and current Foundation vice president of program implementation, Anja Giphart.
