Note from the Field: The Story of a Mwambuli (Teacher) in Western Kenya

Once a month, regardless of the weather, a group of 30 men and women congregate at Pastor Joseph Muhemberi's house in Vihiga, Kenya for their regular Mwambuli Support Group meeting.

In the local Luyhia language, the word "mwambuli" means "teacher" or "helper." After testing positive for HIV in 2006 and participating in a Foundation-sponsored support group, Pastor Joseph decided that he needed to teach his community about HIV/AIDS.

Political Star Power in Zambia

Rubbing elbows with former heads of state is not a regular occurrence for Foundation staff in Zambia, or anywhere, for that matter. But that is exactly what Zambia Country Director Dr. Susan Strasser had the opportunity to do earlier this week when the government of Zambia received several high profile guests  – including the country's former president  – to build momentum and support in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

Led by former President Mogae of Botswana, the Champions for an HIV-Free Generation, is an all-star gathering of distinguished African leaders that advocate for increased efforts to prevent the spread of HIV on the continent.

I’m writing this message after a recent trip to Lesotho – a small country in the middle of South Africa, with the third-highest HIV prevalence rate in the world. Lesotho is called the African “Kingdom in the Sky” for a reason – its mountainous terrain poses constant challenges to the way we deliver critical and lifesaving services. Innovation is, and will continue to be, the key to our success there.

Also, Foundation Ambassador and POZ Magazine Editor-In-Chief Regan Hofmann joined author and longtime Foundation supporter Courtney Sheinmel at a reading and discussion of their respective books on October 12 at the National Arts Club in New York City.
