Brett spent the first two-and-a-half months of his life in the hospital with a heart complication, receiving 35 blood transfusions from 12 donors. In 1987, he tested positive for HIV. He passed away at the age of 27, but not before he got his driver’s license, ran with the Olympic Torch before the Atlanta games, graduated from high school, bought his first car, swam with dolphins, lived on his own, and much more. In this incredible post, Brett’s mom, Marty Mitchell, explains how Brett became an advocate for kids living with HIV, and led a life that defied all odds.
