Countdown to an AIDS-Free Generation.
Last week was a busy one for everyone at EGPAF. On Sunday, March 3, the world was stunned by news of a baby in Mississippi who was functionally cured of HIV, and this past weekend we commemorated National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. In the midst of it all, we received more good news: our video, Countdown to an AIDS-Free Generation, was recently selected for a CINE Special Jury Award as the best film in their Motivational category for 2013.

On November 7, 1991, Earvin “Magic” Johnson made an announcement that shook the country: he was HIV-positive, and would have to retire from the Los Angeles Lakers.
Earlier this week, ESPN premiered a film documenting Magic’s career, the historic announcement, and his life since. In 2010, the Foundation partnered with the Global Health Corps (GHC) to improve health services in the sub-Saharan nation of Malawi. GHC placed two fellows in the Foundation’s office in Malawi’s capital city of Lilongwe to help provide capacity in monitoring and evaluation to support the Foundation’s work in HIV prevention, care, and treatment services for children, women, and families.
After a successful first year, the partnership has expanded to a second country in 2011. This year, GHC will be placing two fellows at Foundation offices in both Uganda and Malawi.
Before leaving for Africa, Eric Nicola, one of the fellows heading to Malawi, sat down with us at our offices in Washington, D.C. to talk about his expectations for the upcoming year.

This week, the world commemorates the 30th anniversary of the world’s first AIDS diagnosis. In those early days of the disease, there was little hope for anyone infected – there were no medicines and no treatment.
Fast forward to today, and the story is much different. Children and adults with HIV are living long, healthy lives thanks to advances in research and treatment.
And one of the biggest success stories: Today, with the right treatment, an HIV-positive woman can give birth to an HIV-negative child.
We thought this would be a good time to hear from Florence Ngobeni-Allen, one of the Foundation’s Ambassadors in South Africa, who is living proof of the power to create a generation born free of HIV. Click past the jump to watch a video about Florence and learn more about one of our most passionate Foundation Ambassadors.
