Rwanda is helping lead the way to end new cases of HIV and AIDS in children. This progress was on display recently when the Rwandan First Lady Jeanette Kagame launched the country’s national initiative to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
During a launch event, she remarked that “significant achievements have been made with PMTCT interventions, and Rwanda is able to prevent 6,500 children from acquiring HIV every year.”
Now more than 80% of health centers in the East-African nation offer prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV services.

Rwanda is a country making great strides in the efforts to eliminate pediatric HIV and AIDS. Much of that progress has come as a result of great collaboration between policy makers, international and national researchers, development partners and health care workers.
In late-November, more than 400 people belonging to all of these groups convened at the 6th National Pediatric Conference on children infected and affected by HIV and AIDS in Rwanda. The main topic of focus for the conference was the role of different sectors in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The conference resulted in multiple recommendations on both prevention of mother-to-child transmission, as well as care and treatment, and the Foundation's own Mary Pat Kieffer, and Dr. Denis Tindyebwa presented keynote speeches.

Like so many other countries where the Foundation works, Rwanda spent December 1 commemorating World AIDS Day. Foundation Regional Communications and Advocacy Officer Esperance Nikuze spent the day documenting some of the country's events, including a soccer match between two local teams that was decided on penalty kicks, and education and advocacy events with special guest speakers from around the country.
