Zimbabwe Note From the Field: It Never Occurred to Me
Message From the Zimbabwe Country Director, Dr. Agnes Mahomva

I worked as a physician in the Zimbabwe national health system for more than 10 years before joining the Foundation in 2002, and have held several different positions at the Foundation since then. After several months of working outside the Zimbabwe program, an opportunity came for me to become the Foundation’s Zimbabwe Country Director in November 2008. I could not resist the chance, as I knew my heart was with the Zimbabwe program.
Zimbabwe is a beautiful nation full of welcoming, dedicated, and hard-working people. But the country has been ravaged by a harsh economic situation, which has been made worse by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Despite the many challenges that the nation is facing, the people of Zimbabwe, together with a number of supporting partners, have remained committed in their fight against HIV/AIDS. According to UNAIDS, Zimbabwe is one of the very few nations in sub-Saharan Africa that has demonstrated a decline in HIV prevalence from 27 percent in 2001 to 16 percent in 2007.
The Foundation, along with its Family AIDS Initiative (FAI) partners, has supported the Zimbabwe national PMTCT program since 2001. As of September 2008, we are working in 28 districts and three major cities. We support 515 PMTCT sites, accounting for about 68 percent of the nation’s total PMTCT sites. Our team has worked tirelessly to ensure that high-quality services reach as many women, children, and their families as possible.
The continuous dedication and enthusiasm demonstrated by our highly professional Foundation country staff and FAI partners, together with the knowledge that the service the team provides is needed and greatly appreciated by the community, has made me very proud to be part of it all again.
