Message From the Regional Program Director, Swaziland, Mary Pat Kieffer

Mary Pat Kieffer (photo: EGPAF)
I remember the first HIV-positive woman I met in 1988. It broke my heart then, and working in Swaziland, where 40 percent of pregnant women are HIV-positive, means that my heart breaks every day. Some wonder whether I get depressed doing this work, but I find that it makes me even more optimistic because our efforts save lives and provide hope to families who otherwise would have none.

The Foundation’s program in Swaziland works to not only prevent HIV infection from mother to child, but provides comprehensive care and treatment services for these women and their families. To see the mothers with healthy children, the parents who have received treatment, and the communities that are thriving – this is the most exciting work there is!
