Message From the Rwanda Country Director, Cornelia Van Zyl

Cornelia Van Zyl
I started with the Foundation in Rwanda as the senior monitoring and evaluation advisor over a year ago, had a baby, and recently came back as the Rwanda country director. It was a busy year at EGPAF Rwanda: In the last 12 months, about 28,000 women received HIV counseling and testing through our PMTCT programs, and 4,675 people received antiretroviral treatment. These numbers and services would not be possible without the hard work and efficiency of our staff, the strong partnership we have with our host government, the health centers’ committed staff, and the assistance we receive from our headquarters in the U.S.

As a mother of two, I was touched by Elizabeth Glaser’s struggle to save the lives of her children. During the past year I’ve met many Rwandese "Elizabeth Glasers," each with a unique and heartbreaking story. These women serve as a constant reminder of the work to be done to eradicate pediatric HIV in Rwanda, and our team is working tirelessly to make it happen.

"In the past, we wondered who the cars with the flowers belonged to," a head nurse told me recently, referring to the Foundation’s logo. "Now that EGPAF supports our health center, we know that these flowers represent dedicated people who try to bring hope to so many children, adults, and their families." I’m proud to be part of this winning team, to work alongside so many inspiring people, within such a dynamic country.
