Foundation Spokesperson Attends State of the Union

In his final State of the Union address, President George W. Bush discussed the success of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in the fight against AIDS, which had particular resonance for two people listening in the First Lady's box: HIV-positive health care worker Tatu Msangi and daughter Faith. Through the Foundation-supported program at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center, Tatu received the counseling and treatment she needed to help prevent transmission of HIV to Faith, who is now a healthy, vibrant three-year-old free of HIV. PEPFAR Operations Research Bill Will Help Maximize Resources in the Battle Against HIV/AIDS

"In 2007, almost half a million children became infected with HIV, most by mother-to-child transmission. Almost all of these infections could have been prevented," Pamela Barnes reminded Congress in a statement supporting the PEPFAR Accountability and Transparency Act. The bill, introduced by Senator Clinton on January 31, promises to maximize resources in the battle against HIV/AIDS. More.

Foundation Announces New Family AIDS Initiatives in Zimbabwe

In mid-January, the Foundation participated in the launch of a five-year prevention of mother-to-child transmission initiative in Zimbabwe, with $12.5 million provided by the United States Agency for International Development and an additional $2 million from the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development. The program is expected to increase access to vital HIV prevention services for women and children. "If we reached all pregnant women in Zimbabwe who are HIV-positive, we could prevent thousands of infections each year," said Foundation president Pamela W. Barnes. The new initiative is also supported by other donors such as the CDC, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Johnson & Johnson. More.
