D.C. Young Professionals Raise Funds, Awareness to Combat Pediatric HIV/AIDS
6/3/2009
Funds Will Support Foundation’s Lifesaving Programs Around the World
Washington, D.C.—On Wednesday, June 10, the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation Young Professionals will host a fund raiser to increase awareness about the HIV/AIDS pandemic and to benefit the Foundation’s lifesaving global programs.
Taking place at Bourbon in the Glover Park neighborhood, patrons can purchase wristbands for $5 that will give them beverage specials and extended happy hour prices. In addition, there will be raffle tickets for an array of items to be awarded at the end of the evening.
“This event is not only helping to raise money to support the Foundation’s mission, it is helping to raise awareness about the fight against pediatric AIDS, both internationally and domestically,” said Foundation Development Coordinator Emily Jacobson.
Worldwide, more than 1,000 children are infected with HIV every day, most as a result of mother-to-child transmission. There is a simple and inexpensive intervention that can prevent most of these infections, but two-thirds of HIV-positive pregnant women do not receive the medicines they need to protect their infants from the virus. The Foundation works to prevent these infections, as well as to provide treatment and support to children and families living with HIV. The Foundation also funds groundbreaking scientific research into the special medical needs of children who are HIV-positive.
“We’re hoping that young professionals around the city come and enjoy great company and the wonderful specials, but more importantly, we hope they leave with a greater awareness of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and a willingness to lend a hand as we work toward creating a generation born free of HIV,” said Jacobson.
The Foundation also supports the D.C. Department of Health and George Washington University’s School of Public Health and Health Services to combat HIV/AIDS in the District. Washington has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the nation, affecting all segments of the population, making it important for everyone to get an HIV test to know their status.
Bourbon is located at 2348 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, and the event will last from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. For more information about this or any other Foundation Young Professionals event, contact Emily Jacobson at 202.448.8404 or ejacobson@pedaids.org.
