New Foundation Data Report Numbers Show Progress

12/18/2009

Every quarter the Foundation releases new data to track our progress in delivering HIV prevention, care, and treatment services in the 17 countries where we work. The data derived from these reports are essential in understanding the impact of our efforts around the globe while helping us find ways to accelerate service delivery so that more individuals receive the care they need to sustain their health and well-being.

The most recent data report, a cumulative representation of our work from 2000 through June 30, 2009, was released last month. It reflects the progress we have made since Elizabeth Glaser first established the Foundation--and illustrates the impact of our programs around the world.

As of June 30, 2009, the Foundation was present in 17 countries, and more than 4,500 sites worldwide, a leap from the six countries and eight sites the Foundation supported in 2000. Since establishing our programs, the Foundation has:

• Provided close to eight million pregnant women with services to prevent transmission of HIV to their infants;

• Tested more than 6.8 million women for HIV through Foundation-supported programs; and

• Enrolled more than 800,000 HIV-positive individuals in care and treatment programs. Of those enrolled, more than 413,000 have begun antiretroviral treatment, 32,000 of which are children under the age of 15.

While the report demonstrates our achievements, there is still much work to be done. The Foundation, together with our partners, aims to meet the goal of reaching 15 million pregnant women with prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services in many of the world’s most vulnerable countries between 2009 and 2013. The Foundation challenges itself and the global community to reach the goal of decreasing new pediatric HIV infections by one-half globally, which would prevent nearly one million infections in children. Continued support is critical to reaching and surpassing these goals.
