EGPAF/Kenya Launches Research Study Comparing Follow-up Services for HIV-Exposed Children

In December 2012, EGPAF launched a research study comparing approaches to continuing care for children exposed to HIV in Kenya. The study, which compared follow-up results when HIV-exposed infant services were provided within Maternal and Child Health (MCH) clinics and in specialized Comprehensive Care Clinics (CCCs) in Kenya, shows that the MCH clinic model provides better follow up to HIV-exposed children compared to the specialized CCC model. Fighting HIV and AIDS in the Democratic Republic of Congo

EGPAF started supporting vital HIV prevention services in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 2001. Currently, we provide prevention of mother-to-child transmission for HIV (PMTCT) services to the majority of the country's population through clinics and hospitals across the country. Additionally, EGPAF is credited with introducing PMTCT to DRC in 2001. As a result of our HIV prevention and treatment work, 600,000 women have been tested, counseled, and treated to prevent the transmission of HIV to their children. As one of the main providers of PMTCT services in DRC, EGPAF has saved the lives and improved the livelihood of thousands of people in the country, and spreads hope that the future of DRC will be brighter without HIV. Swimming to Reach the End of Pediatric AIDS

After he and his sister took part in Dance Marathon at UCLA – a popular annual fundraiser benefiting EGPAF – Adam Moine knew he wanted to do something big to help eliminate pediatric AIDS. He was inspired by hearing the stories of Elizabeth Glaser’s son Jake and other young people affected by HIV, and he knew that he could make a difference. After six months of strenuous training, Adam swam the 20-mile Catalina Channel in August 2012 without swim fins or a wetsuit – and raised over $5,000 for EGPAF. Finishing with a time of 9 hours, 14 minutes, and 11 seconds, Adam accomplished a feat fewer than 300 other people have ever completed. In Pictures: International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012)

The XIX International AIDS Conference was held in Washington, D.C. on July 22-27, 2012. It is the world’s premier gathering for those working in the field of HIV, as well as for policy makers, persons living with HIV, and other individuals committed to ending the AIDS pandemic. EGPAF was well-represented at the event, joining HIV and AIDS researchers, professionals, and policymakers in assessing the current global response, evaluating recent scientific developments; and charting a course forward.

A Time For Heroes Celebrity Picnic 2012

On June 3, 2012, EGPAF’s annual A Time for Heroes Celebrity Picnic brought 1,000 Angelenos together to hang out with stars of the stage, screen and stadium; play old-fashioned carnival games; get creative with arts and crafts; dance to some great music; and enjoy a banquet of unbelievable food — all while helping to end pediatric AIDS worldwide. A Time for Heroes has raised close to $34 million since 1990, including nearly $1 million this year alone, to fund pediatric AIDS research and EGPAF’s international medical programs to prevent new HIV infections in babies and to keep HIV-positive mothers alive through lifesaving treatment. Uganda: A Community Focus, A Common Goal

Today, in collaboration with the Uganda National AIDS Control Program, EGPAF is increasing access to a broad range of comprehensive quality HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) services for children, women, and families. EGPAF works in 13 districts in Southwest Uganda in support of the Strengthening TB and AIDS Response in Southwest Uganda (STAR-SW) project – a five-year, USAID-funded project. In Pictures: Dance Marathon Season 2012

At colleges and universities across the country, Dance Marathon season is in full swing! These events seek to empower campus communities in the fight against pediatric AIDS, raise awareness about the importance of HIV education and testing, and help young people make a difference in halting the spread of the virus. By dancing for up to 36 hours straight, students put on amazing displays of energy, enthusiasm, and an ongoing commitment to the fight Elizabeth Glaser herself started! The Journey to Eliminate Pediatric AIDS Continues at Kids For Kids

The young and the young-at-heart gathered in New York City once again on November 5, 2011 for the 18th annual Kids For Kids Family Carnival, which raised nearly $1 million for EGPAF! Years ago, Elizabeth Glaser imagined a world where children living with HIV and AIDS would lead long, healthy lives. Kids For Kids attendees raised their voices and renewed their efforts to continue to fight the good fight Elizabeth started – and by all accounts, had a terrific time doing it!
