The Foundation is now offering a postdoctoral fellowship for clinicians/scientists from developing countries. The program is aimed at health care professionals who have specific training or experience with HIV/AIDS and hold an M.D. or Ph.D. Applicants must demonstrate commitment to continuing to work in a developing country on HIV/AIDS when the award is complete, as the emphasis of this program is on building long-term scientific capacity in developing countries.

To apply, applicants must be from a developing country, and performing work in a developing country. United States or European citizens living in developing countries are not eligible to apply. The Foundation encourages those who are determined to improve care in the international setting, as well as those interested in basic science, to apply. The subjects for these projects could include, but are certainly not limited to, the following:

• Epidemiology;
• Issues related to implementation of either prevention or therapy programs;
• Transmission of the HIV virus from mother to infant, including breast-milk transmission and prevention;
• Pediatric HIV vaccine development;
• Antiretroviral drug treatment including pharmacology, complications, and resistance; and
• Microbicide research.

In 2004, the first year of the program, the Foundation funded one International Scholar for $57,225.

Details of this program:

• The Two-Year International Scholar Award is a postdoctoral fellowship for clinicians and scientists in developing countries.
• The Award provides two years of salary support and up to $10,000 for supplies or travel.
• Annual salaries range from $10,000 to $30,000 per year based on years of postdoctoral experience and on the country's salary scale.
• Applicants must work with a qualified sponsor, be from a developing country, and must work in a developing country. Scholars must select an experienced sponsor with appropriate qualifications to oversee the proposed research. The sponsor should be a faculty member with an advanced degree (M.D. or Ph.D. or country equivalent) who will oversee the research, provide guidance to the applicant, and can provide evidence of the institution's commitment to the career development of the applicant.
