ABOUT PEDIATRIC AIDS
About Pediatric AIDS

It is unthinkable and grotesque that we make the same mistake over and over again. There should be an uproar of children shouting, "What about me?" But they often can't speak and so their plight goes unnoticed until an outraged parent decides to speak out.

- Elizabeth Glaser, In the Absence of Angels

The Foundation was created at a time when few people knew that HIV/AIDS affected children. There was no research specifically on pediatric AIDS, and the drugs being used and developed for adults were not being used or tested in children.

Established to help level the playing field for children, the Foundation has spent more than two decades funding pediatric research and raising awareness about children's fight against HIV/AIDS. Thanks to this research and awareness, as well as the advent of combination antiretroviral therapy, many children born infected with HIV/AIDS now have the opportunity to grow up healthy. For children in resource-poor countries, however, long-term survival is still a dream.

What is AIDS?
AIDS represents the most advanced stages of HIV, a retrovirus that replicates within a cell, disabling the cell's operation as part of the body's defense against infection.

HIV/AIDS Facts and Statistics
Better treatments have contributed to the increased number of people living with AIDS in the U.S. However, more than 95 percent of people with HIV live in resource-poor nations, where more than half of those in need of treatment aren't receiving it.
